Practices & Guidelines
Revised: October 2007
PRESIDENT
The Branch Report to the NBSRT annual meeting is normally written by the President. (March 2004)
A MARTA representative, normally the President/Director, will attend local NBTA Pre-retirement seminars, to present a 5-10 minute talk to encourage imminent retirees to join MARTA.
Periodically, the President will see that the MARTA information duo-tangs, which have been made (October 2005) for the Board members, are brought up to date either by inserting information in writing, or by replacing needed pages.
SECRETARY
Written minutes and agendas are not run off for members at general meetings, in order to cut down on costs Minutes are read aloud by the Secretary for the members.
The Secretary will mail the minutes to the Board members shortly after meetings. (May 2005)
It is the Courtesy Chairperson who sends cards for special purposes.
TREASURER
The Treasurer should get approval from three (3) Table Officers for payment of unknown or previously unauthorized bills.
Board members, who require such, should have, at MARTA's cost, paper, envelopes, cards, stamps etc. on hand as part of supplies for MARTA, with any remaining supplies to be turned over to successors in the position; receipts must be kept and given to the Treasurer. (May 2005)
Since dues are collected, MARTA is to be treated as a business; members should be reimbursed for any authorized costs incurred on behalf of the Branch, no matter how little.
Members who indicate their attendance at dinners, and who do not show up and do not pay, will be sent a form letter by the Treasurer, but bearing the signature of the President, as a bill for the cost of their dinners. (October 2004)
Donations collected at the Christmas Social: the local Food Bank is given $100.00 (plus any donated foodstuffs) and the remainder goes to the MARTA Scholarship Fund. (Reaffirmed October 2005)
Local dues payment: Members who do not have their dues deducted centrally must pay their dues locally each fall.
The latest pay date is the Fall General Meeting. After that date, the person is no longer a member for that year.
Dues can be sent to the Treasurer from September 1st up to and including the day of the Fall General Meeting. Each locally paying member will receive a letter from the Treasurer in September of each year requesting dues payment. (October 2005)
A letter is to be sent to local payees re: this policy. (October 2005)

2. The scholarship shall be awarded annually in rotating fashion to a member of the graduating class of one of the area high schools, with final identification of the recipient being left to the school's principal.
3. It is preferred, but not essential, that the successful candidate plan to pursue a career in the field of education.
4. The principal criteria of the award shall be academic performance, participation in school activities, and financial need.
5. Sufficient capital must be established and maintained in order that the interest raised will provide the necessary fund on an on-going basis. Money for the scholarship may be realized in three ways:
a) Active use of memorial cards,
b) Projects designed specifically to produce funds for the scholarship, and
c) voluntary contributions or bequests by Association members.
6. All money designated for the Scholarship account shall be deposited by the Association Treasurer in a separated account selected to benefit from the most attractive interest rate. This account shall be known as the Scholarship Account.

11. The rotation will continue in the above mentioned manner as long as the High Schools involved continue to operate.
COURTESY
Activities of the Branch are for members of the Branch (October 2004) first and foremost, and then for guests either of members or of the Branch which include new retirees of the previous June. (May 2005)
It is intended that retired teachers living in the Miramichi Area should not be guests but should be members of the branch. (October 2005)
A sympathy card will be sent to a member in the event of the death of an immediate family member.
Sympathy Cards will be sent to the immediate family of a deceased member and a memorial gift of $20.00 will be given to the Scholarship Fund from the General funds. (October 2007)
Immediate family will normally mean parent, spouse and children, as other family relationships may not be known. (March 2004)
Notwithstanding any policy, and depending on circumstances, if the Executive or Board members feels that a card should be sent for any reason, it will be. (May 2005)
If an honour guard for a funeral is requested OF US, we will advise the family to request the Funeral Home have this announced on the radio with the funeral announcement. Should the deceased be a MARTA member, the announcement will request members of MARTA attend but if the deceased is a retired teacher who is not a MARTA member the announcement will simply request retired teaches attend.
MARTA had to cancel the honouring of older members with lifetime memberships since the spring of 2003, with the introduction of central deduction of dues.
Only members will receive telephone call reminders about upcoming dinner events. (October 2005)
New retirees, who are non-members, will be invited to attend the first general dinner meeting held after their retirement. They must then decide to join to be able to attend future events.
